Eternal Security Provides Physical Assurity (2026-02-02)

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. (Hebrews 10:24)

Yesterday the Holy Spirit gave me a Spiritual GEM that shined so bright that it was undeniably meant for me to share.

Today’s scripture, Psalms 27:1 (NKJV) declares…The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?

Consider…
A couple of friends and I are going through Book 1 one of the Psalms via the Through The Word App. In case you, like me, didn’t know…

AI Overview confirms the Book of Psalms is divided into five distinct books or sections, likely intended to parallel the five books of the Torah (Pentateuch). Each section concludes with a doxology (a formulaic expression of praise).

  • Book 1: Psalms 1–41
  • Book 2: Psalms 42–72
  • Book 3: Psalms 73–89
  • Book 4: Psalms 90–106
  • Book 5: Psalms 107–150

Books 1-4 end with a specific, concluding doxology (e.g., “Amen and Amen”), while Psalm 150 functions as a final, grand doxology for the entire fifth book and the collection as a whole.

The commentators insights have helped transform my reading and understanding of the first 27 chapters of the Psalms thus far, and it’s been amazing. I highly recommend Through the Word Bible App!

Yesterday, the commentator mentioned Psalm 27 was his fight song and shared contemporary songs that would accompany it while reading it. The first accompaniment song that came to mind for me was Today’s song, one that I used to sing decades ago.

With Today’s song playing in the background, I listened to one of the most transformational explanations of today’s verse. The commentator broke verse 1 down this way…

  • The LORD is my light, meaning no darkness shall overtake me
  • The LORD is my salvation, meaning no sin will condemn me
  • The LORD is my stronghold, meaning no weapon formed against me will stand

…so tell me, of whom shall I be afraid.

Then the Holy Spirit took over and reminded me…

  • Jesus said in John 8:12 (NKJV)…“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
  • And Romans 8:1 (NKJV) declares…There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
  • And Isaiah 54:17 (NKJV) declares…No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the LORD.

David’s confidence in God
was rooted in Jesus long before He came in the flesh and dwelt among us. 🤯

I believe that because…

  • Psalms 22 is the prophecy of Jesus’ crucifixion
  • Psalms 23 then acknowledges the Good Shepherd, which Jesus says in John 10:11 (NKJV)…“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
  • Psalms 24 proceeds to proclaim Him as the King of Glory, which Revelation 19:16 (NKJV) attests…And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

You see, God transformed my reading of the Psalms to see that David recognized Jesus as the connective tissue to our life here on earth and eternity. 🤯

God is emphasizing, we must place our hope and trust in Christ alone!

More evidence that this is a Spiritual GEM came in the fact that when I shared my epiphany about today’s verse with Dana she immediately started singing, William Murphy’s Everlasting God…

The Lord is my light and salvation
Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I be afraid?
The Lord is my light and salvation
Whom shall I fear? Yeah, whom shall I be afraid?

I will wait on You
I will wait on You, You, yes
I will trust in You
I will trust in You

And to make sure I didn’t miss it, the opening song led by the youth praise team at my church was, you guessed it, Everlasting God!

God is telling us to…

  • stop worrying and start waiting
  • stop trying to do things out way and start trusting Him and His way

Which brings me to the last and most transformative Spiritual GEM the Holy Spirit showed me from this verse, Light and Salvation are eternal focuses.

When our eternal is secure, our physical endurance can be assured.

II Corinthians 4:16-18 (NKJV) encourages…Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. [17] For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, [18] while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

The Lord is saying, stop fearing the temporal and have faith in the eternal, which is Jesus!

Indeed, the Holy Spirit is telling me to end with the hymn lyrics I began the last Spiritual GEM with…

Time is filled with swift transition,
naught of earth unmoved can stand;
Build your hopes on things eternal,
hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Trust in Him who will not leave you,
whatsoever years may bring;
If by earthly friends forsaken,
still more closely to Him cling.

Refrain:
Hold to God’s unchanging hand!
Hold to God’s unchanging hand!
Build your hopes on things eternal,
hold to God’s unchanging hand!

When we build our hope on things eternal we can be confident the LORD will help us endure what’s happening in the physical.

Today’s song is…
The Lord Is My Light
