Welcome to another day the Lord has made that we should rejoice and be glad in. (Psalms 118:24)

The Holy Spirit led me to reconsider my perspective of time.
Today’s scripture, Psalms 90:2-6, 10, 12 (ERV) acknowledges…
[2] You were God before the mountains were born, before the earth and the world were made. You have always been and will always be God! [3] You bring people into this world, and you change them into dust again. [4] To you, a thousand years is like yesterday, like a few hours in the night. [5] Our life is like a dream that ends when morning comes. We are like grass [6] that grows and looks so fresh in the morning, but in the evening it is dry and dying.
[10] We live about 70 years or, if we are strong, 80 years. But most of them are filled with hard work and pain. Then, suddenly, the years are gone, and we fly away.
[12] Teach us how short our lives are so that we can become wise.
Consider…
The older we get, the faster time passes. That’s completely logical, when you see time as fractions. Look at the math, a year is…
- a third of a three year old’s life
- a tenth of a ten year old’s life
- five percent of a 20 year old’s life
- two percent of a 50 year old’s life
What’s interesting is that the measure of time doesn’t change, just the perspective as it goes on. There’s still…
- sixty seconds in a minute
- sixty minutes in an hour
- twenty-four hours in a day
- seven days in a week
- fifty-two weeks plus in a year
As I wrote that, it occurred to me that even day and night our perspective, because it’s based on where we our relative to the sun.
That harkens me back to the beginning of time, recorded in Genesis 1:3-5 (ERV)…
[3] Then God said, “Let there be light!” And light began to shine. [4] He saw the light, and he knew that it was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. [5] God named the light “day,” and he named the darkness “night.” There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the first day.
A couple of thoughts popped into my mind about this familiar scripture…
- Light was the first thing God spoke into existence.
- Light initially existed in darkness, until God separated it.
- Day and night are just names of light and dark to God.
The Holy Spirit is emphasizing Light is extremely important to God.
Then He reminded me John 8:12 (ERV) says…
[12] Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.”
That verse hit play on Hezekiah Walker singing…
Jesus is the light
Light of the world
Light of the world
Light of the world
He’s the road out of darkness
The brightest way out
Jesus is the light of the world!
You see, light is important to God, because Jesus, the Light, is the road out of darkness to eternal life.
John 1:4-5 (ERV) reiterates Jesus is the illuminating light of the world…
[4] In him there was life, and that life was light for the people of the world. [5] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated it.
It’s interesting that we talk about about life in terms of day and night, but God views it in light and darkness.
For example, 1 Peter 2:9 (ERV) says…
[9] But you are his chosen people, the King’s priests. You are a holy nation, people who belong to God. He chose you to tell about the wonderful things he has done. He brought you out of the darkness of sin into his wonderful light.
Notice God separated us from the darkness of sin (and death) into His wonderful light (Jesus, and life).
The Holy Spirit is telling me that when we focus on time, we miss what’s most important to Him, us living in, and as, His light.
2 Peter 3:8-11 (ERV) exhorts…
[8] But don’t forget this one thing, dear friends: To the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day. [9] The Lord is not being slow in doing what he promised—the way some people understand slowness. But God is being patient with you. He doesn’t want anyone to be lost. He wants everyone to change their ways and stop sinning. [10] But the day when the Lord comes again will surprise everyone like the coming of a thief. The sky will disappear with a loud noise. Everything in the sky will be destroyed with fire. And the earth and everything in it will be burned up. [11] Everything will be destroyed in this way. So what kind of people should you be? Your lives should be holy and devoted to God.
Today’s title was inspired by the emphasis in scripture that a thousand years is like a day and vice versa to God.
The importance of knowing this is to give us a different perspective on our lives. God is telling us to stop focusing on the finite when He’s operating in Infinity. Said another way, stop obsessing on the temporary when He only sees eternity.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NLT) explains…
[11] Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.
Perhaps this is why God is never rushed by our momentary afflictions, or ever cares about us lingering in our mountain top victories. Regardless of what season of life we’re going through, God knows it’s a infinitesimal fraction of eternity, and it’s just not that long.
However, living life in the Light of Jesus is eternally rewarding and fulfilling.
The Holy Spirit is telling us to stop focusing on your life and start focusing on the LORD’s Light.
That’s God’s exhortation today, live in, and according to, the Light of Jesus!
Today’s song is…
Jesus Is The Light
