Peace Found In A Storm (2024-06-07)

Welcome to another day the Lord has made that we should rejoice and be glad in. (Psalms 118:24)

Storms lesson number five: Peace can be discovered in a storm.

Today’s scripture, Psalms 4:8 (NLT) declares…
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.

And Mark 4:37‭-‬40 (KJV) shares…
And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

Consider…
When I was a child I vividly remember a severe storm raging. I remember it being pitch black outside, with heavy winds whistling, thunder crackling and lightning flashing. If I recall, warning sirens were blaring too. But what I remember most was my mom sitting peacefully in a chair, while listening to the weather station on a transistor radio. As I listened to the weatherman telling everyone to find shelter, I found myself searching for the peace my mom had found.

That storm, and specifically my mom’s peace in it, started my quest to find God for myself. I wanted to locate the same shelter that she rested in during this life threatening storm.

Then my mind flashed back to the mornings I found her singing, praying and spending time in God’s word. I remember her reading Our Daily Bread, which I read now too… and it all made sense to me. My mom had peace, because her mind was stayed on the Lord. Isaiah 26:3 (NLT) confirmed my conclusion. It promises…
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

My mom trusted God! My mom was fixated on Jesus!

The reason my mom didn’t worry about finding shelter, was because she lived in the throne room of the Most High daily. Psalms 91:1‭-‬2 (NLT) declares…
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.

A storm revealed true peace, and inspired my walk with God.

I imagine the disciples remembered Jesus speaking to the storm and causing it to cease. But if we look closer, we’ll discover something Jesus did that was even more powerful. He rested in peace. Notice our second scripture shares…
there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him

Jesus was at peace in the midst of the storm, just like my mom.

I believe when He admonished the disciples for their little faith, He was questioning why they would be worried, when the Prince of Peace was resting in their midst. His same question is still relevant for us today.

Think about it, if the Prince of Peace is living in you, why should you ever worry. (Galatians 2:20)

Philippians 4:6‭-‬7 (NLT) exhorts us…
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And today’s first scripture testifies…
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.

I found peace in God for myself, by keeping my mind stayed on Him. More than that, I have peace because Jesus said…
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. – John 14:27 NLT

Today I encourage you to also rest in the peace gifted to us by the Prince of Peace.

I’ll leave you with the lyrics of a song that I replay in my mind, when peace is hard to find…

I couldn’t seem to fall asleep
There was so much on my mind
Searching for that peace
But the peace I could not find
So then I kneeled down to pray
Praying help me please
But then he said you don’t have to cry
‘Cause I’ll supply all your needs
As soon as I stop worrying
Worrying how the story ends
I let go and I let God
Let God have His way
That’s when things start happening
When I stopped looking at back then
I let go and I let God
Let God have his way

Peace is found in letting go and letting God! I am a witness, along with my mom, that it works!

Today’s song, in tribute to my mom, is…
Peace Be Still

Blessings 4HG (1 Corinthians 10:31)
