Welcome to another day the Lord has made that we should rejoice and be glad in. (Psalms 118:24)

Today, we’ll look at the eternal impact of becoming instant friends.
Today’s scripture, 1 Samuel 18:1, 3-4 (NLT), shares the start of David and Jonathan’s friendship…
After David had finished talking with Saul, he met Jonathan, the king’s son… There was an immediate bond between them, for Jonathan loved David. And Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, because he loved him as he loved himself. Jonathan sealed the pact by taking off his robe and giving it to David, together with his tunic, sword, bow, and belt.
Consider…
Have you ever met someone that you immediately ‘hit it off’ with? That person with whom you had an instant connection, from a brief interaction?
In today’s scripture, we read about the instant friendship between David and Jonathan. At first glance, there’s nothing special or significant about this moment of two individuals hitting it off, that is until the Holy Spirit allows us to see it with spiritual eyes.
If we look closer, we can see parallels of Jonathan and Jesus! 🤯
- Jonathan was the King’s son. And Jesus is God’s only begotten Son (John 3:16).
- An immediate connection was made when David met him. And in Matthew 4:18-22 we read where Jesus’ first disciples (Peter, Andrew, James and John) immediately followed Him.
- The scripture mentions Jonathan’s love for David first. And in John 15:9, 16 Jesus tells us that He loved and chose us.
- Jonathan made a solemn pact with David. And Jesus made a friendship pact with those who obey Him (John 15:14).
- Jonathan sealed his pact by taking off everything for David. And Philippians 2:6-8 reveals Jesus took off everything for us.
- Jonathan proved his loyalty by risking his life for David (1 Samuel 20:30-33). Jesus proved His loyalty by giving His life for His friends (John 15:13).
Sometimes we read stories in the Bible and miss the messages embedded in them. Today’s story of instant friendship reveals, when we meet Jesus, we discover…
- He loved us first
- He gave up His divine privileges for us
- And of course He died for us
The even deeper message, is the King’s son befriended David paving the way for Him to receive God’s kingdom plan for David’s life. In a much greater way, Jesus Christ, God’s Son, befriended us and gave His life, paving the way for God’s Kingdom plan for our lives.
Who knew that instant friendship would have eternal benefits. Now that you know, be careful who you instantly befriend, because earthly friends can have eternity impacts too. That’s why 1 Corinthians 15:33 (ERV)
says, Don’t be fooled: “Bad friends will ruin good habits.”
There are eternal impacts of instant friendships, therefore choose wisely.
Today’s song is…
Since Jesus Came
Blessings 4HG (1 Corinthians 10:31)
